Geography

The Global South Foundation will center its operations in the East African region, with its regional offices in Nairobi. Eventually, operations will expand to the (currently) five countries of the East African Community (EAC), since the region shares some aspects of demographics, culture, language, transport and other indicators.

Kenya, an East African country with a population of 40m, is about the size of Texas. Of the 40 million 45.9% are estimated to live in absolute poverty (as of 2010). This is a staggering 18,300,000 persons. Imagine if EVERYONE in the state of New York (or Texas) lived on less than $2 a day. The life expectancy is 55 years. The GNI per capita (national wealth divided by everyone is $780. In contrast, the US GNI is $47,284 per person!

Global statistics show point to about 11 children per 1,000 reported missing in developed countries. Because of poverty, abductions, domestic violence, lack of legal infrastructure protecting children and family rights, this number is likely to be higher in the US. Of children reported missing, approximately 40% are usually found dead, about 50% get sexually assaulted. Statistics show that while about 50% of the children are found/returned within a week, 5-10% never return.

The issue of missing/abducted/runaway/throwaway children is dire. Your involvement will make all the difference in the world.
